Crayonaut is an app for parents: a child photographs their drawing, tells their story out loud and gets it back illustrated. Here is what we keep for that, why, who processes it, and how to delete everything.

Who we are

Crayonaut is a project being founded in Brussels, Belgium. For any question about your data, write to hello@crayonaut.com.

What we keep

Only what it takes to make the story and give it back to you.

  • The photo of the drawing, and its cropped versions. Never a photo of the child.
  • The story as told: the recording is transcribed, then deleted. We keep the text, not the voice. The checked words may be sent to Anthropic (or to OpenAI if it does not answer) to prepare the text before “That’s it”. The book’s illustrations and cover wait for this confirmation; no story credit is used during this preparation. The photo may already have been read and the character’s portrait made.
  • The child’s first name and age, if you fill them in. Both are optional. The age tells us which ages the stories suit and will be used to adapt them (the sentences, the voice, the pictures); it grows by a year every year from the day you gave it, and each story keeps only its band (up to 6, 7 to 9, 10 and up). For Academy films marked “Seen”, we keep the film identifier, the first viewing date and the selected child.
  • The stories and characters made, with their images.
  • The words you write to us about a story (“A word for us”, and the message after “Not really” then “Something else”): we read them to improve the app. They go with the story, or with “Delete everything”.
  • For an account: your email, a fingerprint of your password (never the password itself), the Google or Facebook identifier if you use one, and your sessions. Earned missions and the highest rank and story count are also saved on the account for each child, so you keep them when changing phones. These records are deleted with the family.
  • For an order: your phone number, your email, your note if any, the amounts and Stripe’s payment reference.
  • Five cookies, none for advertising: cn_device (the device), cn_session (the account), cn_lang (the language), cn_ref (a friend’s invitation code, kept 30 days at most and erased once an account is created) and cn_monitoring, for the founder only. During a Google or Facebook sign-in, a ten-minute cookie (cn_oauth) carries the state of that sign-in.

Why

To make the story, keep it on your shelf, share it if you decide to, and deliver an order.

During the test period, we also keep a copy of the drawing and the story: the founder reviews them to check that the hero stays faithful to the drawing, and to improve the product. This copy is on by default; you can turn it off at any time in “What we keep”: it is then erased. “Delete everything” erases that copy too.

Who processes this data

We sell nothing to anyone. A few services work for us:

  • OpenAI transcribes the story, describes the drawing, draws the images and places the acting cues of the reading; it writes the story only when Claude cannot, and reads it aloud, when you ask, only when ElevenLabs is off.
  • Anthropic (Claude) writes the story from what the child told (the text, never the voice), the hero’s name and description, then checks that the portrait, the cover and the pages look like the drawing and that the cover’s title is spelt right: it receives those images and that title for this.
  • ElevenLabs reads the story aloud, when you ask, from its text; never the child’s voice.
  • Pika, or fal.ai when Pika does not answer, receives the hero’s portrait and movement instructions to create its animation, when this feature is enabled.
  • Stripe takes the payments and receives for that the amounts, the names of the items (with the story’s title and the hero’s first name) and your email. No card details ever pass through the app.
  • Resend sends our emails: order confirmation, verification, new password.
  • Fly.io hosts the app and its data, in Paris.
  • Google and Facebook, only if you choose to sign in with them. They see neither the drawing nor the child’s first name.

For how long

Until you delete them. Your stories, characters, drawings and account stay as long as you don’t ask us to delete them.

A paid order stays in our books as an accounting record: the items, the quantities and the amounts — without your phone number, your note, the story’s title or the hero’s first name, and without your email, unless you asked to receive our news.

The copy kept during the test period, on by default, goes as soon as you turn it off, or with “Delete everything”.

Delete your data

In the app: the settings, then “Delete everything”. Everything goes at once: stories, characters, drawings, links, account and test copy. One thing stays: if you joined Crayonaut through a friend’s invitation, a one-way fingerprint of your email address (never the address itself), so that one address counts only once. Our technical backups erase themselves within five days.

Or write to hello@crayonaut.com: we delete everything by hand.

Children

Crayonaut is an app for parents, used with their child. We show no advertising, profile nobody and sell nothing to third parties. A child never has to give anything but a first name, and that is optional.

Your rights

You can access your data, correct it, delete it, receive a copy of it and object to any commercial use of your email.

For any of this, write to hello@crayonaut.com. We answer within a month.
